How to do picture-perfect wedding makeup you'll love for years

Makeup artist, Arabella Preston’s client list reads a who’s who of British beauties, from our national treasure the Duchess of Cambridge to the super cool Edie Campbell and sports hero Victoria Pendleton. Having worked on many high-profile brides, she knows exactly how to achieve Big Day makeup that you’ll be picture-proud of in years to come.

“It is the ultimate balancing act between looking like yourself, but at your very best. Like you've had ten hours sleep. You need to look groomed but not over-done and allow your dress to do the talking” Arabella says, stating that the most important factors are “longevity and naturalness”. Engrave the ‘n’ word into your psyche!

So, what advice does she have for choosing a bridal makeup artist?

“Bear in mind that you will be spending the last two hours of your un-married life with this person and they will be with you at a very intimate and emotional time. They should be calm, put you and your friends and family at ease and be able to blend into the background when necessary. I can't count the number of times I have been left alone with the bride before she leaves for the church and have fitted countless veils, helped button-up dresses etc. An adaptable easy-going nature is key - as well as having perfected the ninja art of wedding make-up of course!”

Any tips for applying makeup yourself? “Take your time! I always advise my brides to lock themselves in the bathroom for 30-40 minutes so they can relax and not get distracted by mum's and bridesmaids. Get decent tools such as a foundation brush (I love the Urban Decay Optical blurring brush for this) and work the product into the skin a little at a time - building up to the coverage you need.”

To make your foundation last, Arabella says: “Don't overload the skin with products; use a primer such as Laura Mercier and a long-wearing foundation like Estee Lauder Longwear.”

Arabella explains the classic bridal look: “Emphasised eyes, a blended brown liner, smudged into the roots; perhaps with a fine line of long-wearing gel liner in an off-black (I like Bobbi Brown gel liner in Caviar Ink). A soft pink blush on the apples and a natural lip - never gloss. A lipstick worked into the lip with a brush, then blotted gives the most natural finish. I like the NARS satin lip pencils.”

But first, don’t neglect the basics. How should you prep the skin?

WATCH: A WEDDING HAIR MASTERCLASS

“Don't do anything to it you haven't tried before in the few weeks before your wedding. Use a gentle facial exfoliator once or twice a week and keep it well moisturised and hydrated. I love Pond's Institute Cold Cream (£4.07) as a skin prep. The super hydrating formula cleanses and moisturises skin at the same time. Use a warm flannel to remove and you get a gentle exfoliation too. If your skin is oily then this might be enough and you can go straight ahead with your foundation or primer. If your skin is a little dry then you will probably want to put a little moisturiser on such as Pond's Institute Hydro-Nourishing Cream which leaves skin soft all day long. If you have combination skin then just put the moisturiser on the dryer areas to avoid becoming greasy. Always apply your moisturiser a good 20 minutes before you start your make-up to allow it to sink into the skin.”

If you’re worried about how to tackle touch-up on the day, Arabella says to carry makeup with you, but not personally! “Get your best friend or maid of honour to be your makeup artist on the day. They should have a pressed powder and brush, blusher, lipstick and cotton buds in a bag for you and give you a swift touch-up before formal photographs.”

Arabella is a Pond’s Institute ambassador pondsinstitute.co.uk and the Pond’s Institute Collection is available nationwide in Boots.

Pale porcelain skin, filled in brows, lashings of lashes and a matte red lip – you won’t blend into the background but if it’s a vintage-themed wedding, you’ll fit right in.
