Undercut Hairstyles for Men

Men's undercut hair is making a comeback thanks to the retro vibe of TV shows like Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire. Undercut hairstyles for men, whether inspired by the 1920s or 1960s, have been sported on many celebs and they can be the right choice for any sophisticated man.

When choosing the right undercut hairstyle, men should take into account their hair type as long as the maintenance requirements of such haircuts.

Before you ask your barber or stylist for one of the many undercut hairstyles for men, you need to consider how far up the short sides and back will be and how long the hair will be at the top. The shape of your face and head should come into consideration when choosing a specific type of men's undercut hairstyles.

Thanks to celebrities like David Beckham, the hottest look when sporting the undercut hairstyles for men is the slicked back look, but that's not the only choice. Longer on the sides than the edgy undershave, undercut hairstyles for men look best with longer or angular faces, but come in a variety of styles suited to many face shapes and hair types.

For the shorter sides and back you can opt for having your hair cut with scissors over comb or with clippers. The second option works best with number 2 or 3 clippers that give you a sharp look. You can also blend different lengths to get the most flattering style. For a thinner temple, you can go extra short with number 1 clippers, then ask your stylist to blend into 2 and 3 on the sides and on the back.

When getting the undercut hairstyle, men should remember that the longer on top, the better. The extra length will give you plenty of style options, including the popular slicked back look.

For the finishing touches, make sure the outline is sharp both on the sides and the back of the head, blending between the top and sides isn't the trendy look you're going for.

Undercut Hair Ideas and Faux Undercuts

Undercut haircuts are popular with women looking for an edgy look without giving up their long locks. Find out the best ways to get a trendy undercut hairstyle.

A unisex haircut with shorter sections, the undercut hairstyle is increasingly popular for women. Shearing away a section of hair is the punk version of this style, but you can also sport the undercut hair look without cutting too much.

A popular style for men for much longer, the undercut hair has become a hot edgy look after the likes of Rihanna and Miley Cyrus played with its punk sensibilities.

The most popular version of the undercut for women involved shearing one side of the head, that can add a punk or grunge edge without sacrificing the longer locks that remain on top.

Closely related to the girl mohawk, the undercut usually involves an asymmetrical look that highlights just one side of the head, where the hair is either shorn or worn in cornrows.

The modern undercut hairstyle strays from the more extreme look sported in the 80s, for a looser and longer cut with layered and a softer finish. Don't worry if you're exposing dark roots by having your hair shorn for the undercut haircut: it's part of the look.

Miley Cyrus and Rihanna are amongst the latest singers to sport the (faux) undercut look that Gwen Stefani has been trying on and off for more than a decade. While singers like Kelis and Cassie go for a more extreme version, with shorn sides, Hollywood stars like Liv Tyler, Milla Jovovich and Scarlett Johansson prefer getting the look without any long term effects.

Faking the undercut with cornrows can be equally trendy and it gives you time to get used to the cut without having to shorten your hair too much when you're bored with the look.

Getting the faux undercut is fairly simple if you have long hair and are inspired by this look that worked for Ke$ha and Christina Aguilera. The first step is making a deep side part, close to the ear on the side you want the undercut. Temporarily secure the top portion of the diagonal strands while you apply mousse to the lower half and blow dry.

Use a boar-bristle brush to pull your hair to one side as you prepare to braid. Create the cornrows vertically starting at ear level and secure the tips of the braids.

Once you're done with braiding you can release the top section and add dry shampoo for extra texture, to complete the look of undercut hair styles without making any permanent changes to your look.

Get the look: Miley’s undercut

Miley Cyrus (c Twitter)

Twitter

Miley Cyrus is certainly keeping fans on their toes with her new hairstyle. The 19-year old has chopped off her locks in favour of an edgy shaved undercut. Admittedly we were shocked when we first saw the images but we have to admit the look is starting to grow on us.

We asked Mark Woolley, celebrity hairdresser and creative director of the Electric Hairdressing brand how get the look.

Step one: Ask your stylist for a 'scissor over comb' undercut. The hair is cut very short from the nape of the neck up to the temples, leaving length on the top of the head.

Step two: The top section of hair is cut to brow length with chopped jagged edges that fall softly onto the face to achieve a feminine yet tom-boy hairstyle.

Step three: A full head of platinum blond is then applied to complete the look.

I would advise only those lucky enough to have a small, pretty pixie face with a good head shape to go for this look as you are going to need all these attributes.

Good Luck!
